Character name: Kiryuu Ren
Character canon: Vampire Knight
Canon summary: Ren was born the youngest child of Yuuki Kuran and Zero Kiryuu and possesses both Pureblood lineage and hunter lineage, causing some ruffled feathers among the more conservative voices of vampire aristocracy. She grew up in relative seclusion from most of the outside world, living on the grounds of Cross academy with her parents and elder sister, Ai.
Despite growing up in relative peace and living a carefree life, not all of Ren’s childhood was without conflict. The growing unrest between humans and vampires caused many issues, some of which she came into direct contact with as she grew older. Her family prioritized her growing up as a young vampire at Cross Academy, attending school there with other peers her age and supervised by her doting older sister. On her shoulders rests the burden of the past her family lived - from the resentment between vampires and humans to the history of the family members who have come before her.
During Ren’s childhood and adulthood, vampires have become public knowledge and thus facilitating the public unrest and conflict. The present timeline implies that once the fighting has passed, giving way to peace, a cure for vampirism is also found. Decades later, Ren and Ai contend with the reawakening of their ancestor and Ai’s birth father, Kaname Kuran and keep a watchful eye on him while trying to give him the peaceful existence Yuuki yearned for him to have in his previous life.
Character in canon: Ren, despite being a thousand year old vampire, is actually quite young by comparison to most vampires in canon. Purebloods have a longer lifespan than aristocrats and at times will pass this time either in slumber or seclusion as much as possible. Though, at a thousand she has experienced a full life, but not one without conflict. Unrest between humans and vampires comes about as vampires become more public and make themselves more aware to humans.
Being the child of a pureblood vampire and a hunter, Ren has been heavily guarded her entire life by those closest in her family's circle of friends. Many people in both vampire society and on the hunter's side were not supportive of her parent’s union and vampire aristocracy is even more obviously against Ren’s existence. This is something she is grew more aware of as she became older. Ren had to learn to be a little suspicious and careful with who she puts her trust into. As a result, Ren is more liable to act first and allow an explanation later, regardless of the age or physical build of the individual he considers to be a threat. She acts as bodyguard and protector to her sister and Kaname. The fact that Kaname carries Yuuki's heart inside of him, as a result of a transfer of her life for his as a human, is a major factor in that protection Ren grants him.
Ren is warm and gentle towards the people she cares about. Her sister is someone who is especially important to her. Their relationship is to the extent that Ren instinctively knows how she'll react or want to react when she cannot voice it herself. He also voices thoughts that Ai has trouble putting into words. This knowledge particularly advantageous to her teasing nature, in regards to her. Something Ren enjoys is making her blush.
Ren has a kind personality and is somewhat softer in manner than her father. He is also quick to act and can be incredibly blunt. When meeting Kaname, Ai's birth father and the person who is alive due to her mother's sacrifice, he doesn't mince words. Ren even stated, very bluntly to Ai, that he wants to draw reactions from him and see him get riled up. This is most likely because of residual feelings of resentment he feels for Kaname. If not for him, her beloved mother would still be alive and with them. For that reason, he pushes buttons and waits for reactions to try and figure out how he feels about him and how to move forward.
It's clear that Ren is also a quick learner, and seems to enjoy domestic chores. She is good at cooking, and is happy to jump at the chance to do something he finds productive. While she does enjoy mundane tasks, she also is hinted at to be skilled in combat, displaying the usual vampire abilities but also being a skilled wielder of hunter weapons such as firearms. From a young age Ren took an interest in such things, fueled by her desire to protect her elder sister.
Overall, Ren is almost a compliment to her sister's personality. While she can guarded toward strangers, in general she is warm, polite, honest, and possesses a great deal of love and affection. She has a huge heart, and doesn't take lightly the sacrifices of others. Ren’s greatest motivation is always to first and foremost protect her elder sister, Ai. As a child she was more open and innocent when compared to her older self who prioritizes seclusion and security of her sister and Kaname.
Being born into a world of vampires and humans, Ren struggles to fit somewhere in either of those worlds, as she is a vampire but also not a Pureblood, like her sister and mother. This isn’t unlike the struggles Zero went through when coping with his status as a vampire and a hunter. She was kept at a distance from this conflict as much as possible when she was younger, but once she comes into her own as a young vampire she begins to become more aware of how she is viewed to the outside world.
Purebloods look down on her for her parentage, seeing her as “unclean” and a stain on the Kuran lineage. Ren decides from a young age that she wants to be someone who can protect Ai. This influences her later on in life as well, as she grows up. She tries her best to learn the skills her father practiced as a hunter - specifically a proficiency with guns. She also uses this as a coping mechanism when trying to come to terms with her life as a vampire, experiencing things such as thirst and bloodlust. It becomes difficult for her to open up to Ai at first, but she later comes to look on that time in her life with some bittersweetness.
Character in Imeeji: In Imeeji, Ren would still be the same person at her core. She would be more relaxed without worrying about keeping an eye on Kaname or Ai, maybe even returning to some of her carefreeness from her younger years. Without the conflict of the past weighing down her outlook on life, Ren would be a lighter and more open person to people who aren’t already in her immediate circle.
Coping with the loss of her memories would be hard, but Ren at her core is someone who worries for others before she worries about herself. While Ren is not an arrogant person, she would show more of her teasing nature to other people and have a calming presence for those who are in need. In canon, Ren is very much a grounding force for Ai who can be more eccentric and anxious around her father. Ren is prone to humor and joking, while also leaving no room for secrecy or lies.
If she were to meet other vampires or those accepting of vampires she might become more open to sharing that part of herself with people as well. This would be refreshing after trying to spend much of her life in seclusion and growing wary of letting people into her immediate circle of loved ones.
As for which unit: I think Ren would fit well in SensitIV as she puts much of her own energy into the welfare of others, be they family or friend. She puts others above herself. She is also a calming presence and could probably use encouraging to take care of herself and be selfish now and again. Bad End=Dead End would be another interesting choice of something that is more outside of who she is as a person and would be fun to imagine her trying to be bad to fit in. It would also probably line up with her more secluded nature that she develops as an adult (and also for aesthetic purposes lol).
Unit Preferences:
Priority: SensitIV
Acceptable: Taisho Roman Revolution, LiLiS, Pep!Pep!, Heart Soldier Senshi, or Bad End=Dead End
